As we all know there are so many kind of traditional ceremonial in Bali which each of the village has their own way to implement the traditional ceremonial. The philosophies which contained in each of the ceremonial is an implementation of gratitude to the almighty god Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, where the form by doing upakara has it’s own purpose with many kind of offering to the gods in form of ”banten” (offering). There some symbols contained in the banten it self which means Representative of the purpose from each traditional ceremonial.
The Melaspas is one of the Bali traditional ceremonial where the purpose is to clean the negative element from the new site of building or land and let the great spirit of goodness stays in the building which in Balinese language “medaging or pedagingan” the purely goodness spirit.
There are great philosophies contained deep inside the Melaspas traditional ceremonial. The melaspas which came from word “mala” means bad or negative elements and”pas” means cleaned or to make pure so the word Melaspas means to make something cleaned from the negative element so it became pure. The Melaspas especially done for new buildings like : houses, Merajan (temple / shrine), hotels, villas, etc. Besides cleaning the building from the negative element, the Melaspas also has purpose to give the great spirit a place in the building, so the owner will be protected from the negative elements.
The Melaspas ceremonies are lead by the Hindu Highest Priest “Pedanda” usually continued with holy performance of Rejang Dewa (sacred dance to the Gods), Topeng Sidakarya (Mask dance) and Wayang (Puppet Shadow show) along with Kidung Wargasari (traditional choir) describing the descendant of god and accompanied by various offering of Gamelan music, songs, dance, foods, and other arts to receive their blessings.
